Panther Wrestlers Interviewed by Channel 23:
Three Panther Wrestlers were interviewed after the dual meet with McHi by Jason Notoras, a sports reporter from Channel 23 in Brownsville. Notoras stated that it was his intent to record some of the matches and show them during the sports segment of the 10:00 o’clock news, but he was delayed at a basketball game in Santa Rosa and arrived in Weslaco after the dual meet had ended.
Lucio Cruz, Charlie Villegas, and Justin Ramirez took turns answering Notoras’ questions regarding the essentials of wrestling, the Panther wrestling program, and what they have learned from competing in the sport. Besides the interview, Notoras used stock video footage to highlight wrestling action.

During the airing of the story, Notoras also noted the achievements of the WHS Wrestling Program during the past eight years and the expectations placed on the team by the wrestlers themselves. Good Job !!!

Channel 23 News reporter, Jason Notoras, interviews WHS Panther Wrestlers, Lucio Cruz (Soph.), Captain Juan “Charlie” Villegas (Jr.), and Justin Ramirez (Jr.), left to right, after the dual meet with McAllen High School. Each of the wrestlers took his turn before the camera, answering questions regarding the sport of wrestling and what each of them has gained from being in the sport.

Panther Wrestler Fundraiser Posters Available:
The Takedown Club’s fundraiser, 11”X17” posters of our Panther Wrestlers, are now available. Those wrestlers and their parents who attended the McHi dual meet received their packets at this meet. The remainder of the poster packets are available from Coach Vanessa Marines.

The cost of the two poster packet is $10.00 to the parents. The parents, or wrestlers, can then market the posters to local businesses for $50.00 each. Once the wrestling season is over, the wrestler can ask for the poster back from the sponsor and keep it as a remembrance of their efforts during the season. If the 21 packets (42 posters) find sponsors of at least $50.00 each, we will be able to earn $2,100.00 for our wrestling team. Under UIL rules we must submit the monies to the school district, but can suggest a particular use for the funds.
We would like the poster sponsorships turned-in on the first day of school (spring semester), January 6, 2008. Please have the sponsors make checks payable to the Weslaco I.S.D. General Fund.

Thank you to the parents, relatives, and friends that provided transportation to the Nava Studios on Friday, December 19th, so that the photos for these posters could be taken. At least three photos were taken of each wrestler, in various stances, and each wrestler selected the pose that they liked best for the final poster layout.

Reminder to parents: The individual wrester and wrestling team photos will be taken at the end of the season. This particular packet will have various photo options (8”x10”, 5”x7”, wallet, etc.) that you may purchase. Notices will be sent out when that time comes (February).

Practice Schedule for the Week of December 29th: Being that we are in the middle of our wrestling season, the team continues to have practice during the holiday break. The scheduled times for this week are from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon, Monday, December 29th through Friday, January 2nd. The team will have practice on New Year’s Day! Parents, please make sure your wrestlers are in bed at an appropriate hour, that they get up with sufficient time to have breakfast and make it to practice on time; and that arrangements are made to pick-up your wrestler as well. Thank you!

Tomas Garces Tournament on Tap January 3rd: This highly anticipated wrestling tournament will take place in the Sepulveda Gym on Saturday, January 3, 2009. Teams invited to compete this year are San Benito High School, PSJA High School, PSJA North High School, McAllen High School, McAllen Rowe High School, Sharyland High School, Weslaco East High School and our own Weslaco High School. This will be a team dual format tournament, so there will be plenty of wrestling on display throughout the day.

A ceremony before the start of the tournament will honor the memory of Tomas Garces, WHS Class of 2003, the former Panther Wrestler, two-time District Champion, two-time Regional Qualifier, and two-time State Qualifier; who was killed Sept. 6, 2004 in Baghdad, Iraq when his convoy was attacked by enemy forces using an improvised explosive device. Tomas was only 19 years old at the time.
Make plans to attend and bring the entire family and holiday guests. It’s a great way to bring the holiday season to a close and continue a Weslaco Panther Wrestling tradition. And remember….
This One’s For Tommy………………

“ Intense, tough, never-gave-up; when you wrestled him, you were grabbing the tail of a rattlesnake." Coach John Glapa referring to his wrestler Tomas Garces. (Associated Press Release)

285 Alex Solis
(11th/1st yr.) Being on the short end of a 70 lbs. disadvantage, Alex trailed 0-2 and 0-4 before being pinned with 22 seconds left in the second period by his Rio Grande City opponent, Osiel Hinojosa. (L) In his second match, Alex led 2-1 and 4-1 before pinning his Weslaco East’s Alex Ochoa 21 seconds into the second period. (W) In his third match, Alex was tied at 0-0 in the first period, trailed 0-1 in the second period before edging his San Benito opponent, David Gonzalez, 2-1 in a decision. (W) Alex finished 3rd in his division. Congratulations!

Let’s Fill Up The House This Thursday Night! One of the goals of the Takedown Club is to help increase attendance at our wrestling dual meets and the Tomas Garces Tournament. This Thursday, December 18th, at 7:00 p.m. we will entertain the PSJA Memorial Wolverines in a dual meet at the Lackey Gym on the WHS Campus. We have asked the wrestlers to invite their friends, we are asking parents to invite family members and friends, promotion posters have been sent to the two feeder middle schools (Central Middle School and B. Garza Middle School) as well as the Winter Texan Trailer Parks in the Mid-Valley. (There are some high schools in Iowa that attract three to four thousand fans to their meets!) We know that once they attend, they will get hooked by our sport and keep coming back to support our kids.

Wrestling Program Ads Due: Wednesday at Noon Please turn-in all information for program ads by Wednesday, December 17th at noon. The money can be turned-in by Thursday, December 18th or as received. The program will contain photos of the varsity, names of the junior varsity, scoring information, scoring score sheets, team and wrester accomplishments and copies of The Takedown Newsletter to date. A big “Thank you” to the parents who have obtained ads to support our wrestlers.

2008-2009 Panther Wrestling T-shirt Orders:
The t-shirts are due from the shop in time for this Thursday’s dual meet. Depending when we get them, we will be able to issue them Wednesday after practice, if not, Thursday at the dual meet. If you have not submitted your information yet, we will be taking a second order later this week.

Thank you for the positive remarks regarding The Takedown Newsletter. See you on the mat!

Intensity, it’s what it takes to be a champion. (Anonymous)

Volume 01- Issue 03

  • Correction: In Issue 02, under the heading Editorial, I wrote that, “It was noted (at a September 16th meeting) that the equipment list had been submitted to WISD/WHS Administration in February of 2008.” WHS Principal Isidoro Nieto informed me that WHS Administration does not order athletic equipment; that it is the responsibility of the Athletic Department to order the equipment, provided that the coach of said sport submits an equipment list. I apologize for the error.

  • Parent/Booster Meeting CANCELLED: Our first meeting of the wrestling year was to be held tonight, December 1, 2008 at 7:00 p.m. At this point in time, we still do not have permission from the WHS Athletic Department nor the WISD Athletic Director (to whom the WHS Athletic Department referred the request) to hold our meeting in the WHS Field House Film Room. Being that I will be in meetings all morning on Monday, I feel that even if permission is granted, it will be too late to notify the forty-five families on our contact list. At this point our meeting is cancelled. However, I will be handing out the agendas to the wrestlers after practice so that you may review the information on the various topics listed. There are items that we need a quick turnaround on, so please ask your student/wrestler for the agenda packet.

  • Wrestlers Multi-tasking UIL Competitions/Events: There are several wrestlers this year that are competing in multiple sports and/or are band members. Parents, please make sure that you and your student wrestler keep an open line of communication between Coach Pederson and Coach Vela, as well as Mr. Aldape (Band), Mr. Cardenas (Mariachi), and coaches of sports that overlap with the wrestling season; well in advance of our dual meets and tournaments so that arrangements can be made to accommodate the team, the student, and the parents.

  • Birthday Wishes: Tomas Gonzalez, sophomore, 1st year wrestler, celebrates his birthday, Sunday, December 7th. Enjoy!

  • Third Six Weeks Academic Progress Reports: Grades are to be submitted by 8:00 a.m., Monday, December 1st for the third six weeks progress reports. Students should have them in hand by Thursday. If you are signed-up for the WISD Parent Portal, you will know your child’s scores well in advance. If you are not signed-up for the Parent Portal, please contact the WHS Administration (956.969.6700) for instructions on how to do so. Remember, our goal is that all of our student wrestlers be eligible at the end of the 3rd Six Weeks period (December 18th); if not, they will miss the remainder of the wrestling season.

Takedown Booster Club Agenda 12.01.2008

The Takedown Club
Weslaco High School Panther Wrestling Booster Club

AGENDA December 1, 2008 – 7:00 P.M.

01. UIL Booster Club Rules: The UIL Booster Rules cover items such as fund raising, written policies, finances, club restrictions, valuable consideration, etc. Please read the rules carefully so that we comply with all regulations and not hinder the eligibility of our team. (Ref. to Att. No. 1).

02. The Takedown Club Bylaws: Please review the proposed bylaws. There is a form for you to accept, amend, or reject the bylaws. (Att. No. 2.)

03. 2008/2009 Wrestling T-shirts: Parents/Boosters/Wrestlers, support our team by ordering the 2008-2009 wrestling t-shirt. The cost is $10.00. The purple shirt will have a stylized “W” with a panther, in wrestling headgear, on the “W”, and the word “wrestling” underneath. Order forms are included in the agenda packet. For those attending the San Benito Tournament this coming weekend, we can get the shirts in time for the tournament if you turn in your order forms and money by Tuesday, December 2nd at 6:00 p.m.. Remaining orders need to be turned-in by Monday, December 15th. This is not a fund raiser for the booster club, the price of the t-shirt is direct from the t-shirt shop. Questions? – call Vanessa Marines, Assistant Coach 956.376.8645 or Hector Rene Garcia, 956.793.4193. (Refer to Att. No. 3.)

04. 2008/2009 Individual/Team Wrestling Posters Fundraiser: This consists of an 11”x17” poster of each individual wrestler with a team photo overlay at the bottom of the poster. Two posters will be available for each family for a total of $10.00. The posters are to be marketed to local businesses, family doctor, orthodontist, favorite restaurant, etc. for $50.00 each. Being that we have 45 athletes in the wrestling program, if each poster brings in $50 this equals $4,500.00 for our wrestling team. As treasurer for another program that had this promotion, I saw many $50 checks, but there were also checks of $250, $500, and $750 for individual posters. This is a great opportunity to help our team. The student wrestler can ask for the poster back after the completion of the season. In the past the team/individual photos were taken after the completion of the wrestling season. Being that we do not want to interfere with practice and the weekends are booked with tournaments, we are looking at getting the wrestlers photographed on Friday, December 19th, the day after school is let out for the holidays. Our goal is that the posters be ready for distribution when students return in January. Refer to poster samples. (Refer to Attachment No. 4.)

05. 2008/2009 Program: We are producing a program for our wrestling team that will contain a team roster, season schedule, possibly photos of the wrestlers, wrestling rules and scoring descriptions – for our new fans, a listing of team championships, individual champions, and advertisements. The program will have a distribution of three home dual meets and a revised version for the Tomas Garces Tournament. This project is a fund raiser for our wrestling team. The programs will be a start, simple this year – more sophisticated next year; being run at my office and bound at a local print shop. The program will sell for $3.00. Sample ads and ad sign-up sheets for members to solicit ads are enclosed. (Refer To Attachment No. 5.)

06. Alumni Night – December 18, 2008 – Before Dual Meet with PSJA Memorial High School: We would like to acknowledge our alumni wrestlers, those who laid the foundation for the program that we have today, by introducing them to those in attendance at this dual meet. A homecoming of sorts. If you know of wrestlers that are off at college or have moved away but might be in town for the holidays, please call Hector Rene Garcia (956.793.4183) with their contact information.

07. Parent Night – January 5, 2009 – Before Dual Meet with Weslaco East High School: We would like to acknowledge all of our parents and their student/wrestlers before the start of this dual meet and conclude the evening with a meet and greet.

08. Contact Information – We have been able to get most everyone of our wrestling families and booster registered in the past two months. We are trying to get information to everyone as fast as possible. If you have an email address that we can forward information to please submit it to the following address: hgarcia@mvgdesign.us. If you do not have email, please forward your mailing address and telephone number(s) to Hector Rene Garcia, 1314 Ivy Avenue, Suite A, McAllen, Texas 78501, 956.631.1945 tel., 956.631.1968 fax, 956.793.4183 cell. We will forward information by U.S. Mail to those without email.

09. Tomas Garces Team Duals Tournament: Our goal is to expand this tournament (two days, twelve teams) and make Weslaco an annual destination for wrestling teams during the holiday break. We will forward information on this proposal within the next few weeks.

10. Dual Meet/Tournament – Team Refreshments/Food: Weslaco ISD provides some money for meals when our wrestlers go out of town, but they do not cover all the meals; WISD does not cover anything for WHS meets or for the Weslaco East Tournament that we attend. We are asking that the parents of the varsity wrestlers (girls and boys) contribute $25 to help with the Gatorade, water, and granola bars that help sustain the team through the meets. As we learn more about what WISD monies cover we will inform our parents so that we can make sure everyone is taken care of at mealtime. (Please submit the money to Vanessa Marines at practice.)

11. F.Y.I. – We will be submitting a team schedule to the Weslaco ISD Board of Trustees so that they can use their UIL Pass to attend our wrestling dual meets and/or the Tomas Garces Tournament. Several of our members have stated their close relationship to an individual board member(s); please encourage them to attend.

12. Wrestling Facility: The area currently used by our wrestling teams – upstairs mezzanine behind the bleachers at the Sepulveda Gym – is not conducive to proper training. The area is long and narrow, and individual mats, approximately seven 10’x10’ are used to train the wrestlers, in lieu of a space able to accommodate two 40’x40’ mats – which equal 18 individual mats – along with wall pads and support space. That championship wrestlers and teams have come from this space says a lot about the desire and determination of the students that participate in the wrestling program. We are proposing a formal request to WISD regarding a facility that will meet the needs of the wrestling program so that the program may expand and continue to thrive. Please review the attached drawings and information and if in agreement, sign the petition list (feel free to get other signatures as well) and return them through your student/athlete to Vanessa Marines at wrestling practice by December 15th. (Attachment No. 6).

If you have any questions, feel free to call: Hector Rene Garcia, 1314 Ivy Avenue, Suite A, McAllen, Texas 78501. 956.793.4183 cell; 956.631.1945 office; 956.631.1968 fax.

Thank you! See you Thursday night at the dual meet with the San Benito Greyhounds. 7:00 p.m.

GUIDE TO A WRESTLING MATCH

New to our sport?

Starting The Match: Wrestlers begin each match on their feet, facing each other in the neutral position. The wrestler wearing a GREEN leg band is the HOME wrestler and the VISITING wrestler wears RED. The wrestlers shake hands and the referee blows the whistle to begin wrestling.

Wrestling Positions: While the first period begins with the wrestlers in the neutral position, a coin toss determines which wrestler gets his choice of positions in the second and third periods. If the home wrestler gets to choose his position for the second period (top, bottom, or neutral), the visiting wrestler gets his choice in the third period. The wrestler that wins the coin toss, after the first period has been completed, has the opportunity to choose position, or defer his choice to the third period.

Points: Are Scored Throughout The Match Wrestlers are awarded points for the following moves: takedown, reversal, escape, and near fall. The referee can also award points for illegal holds or stalling.

Takedown (two points): A takedown occurs when either wrestler, starting from the neutral position, gains control of his opponent on the mat.

Escape (one point): The defensive wrestler (on bottom) is awarded one point for an escape when he moves into a neutral position.

Reversal (two points): The defensive wrestler (on bottom) is awarded two points for a reversal when he gains control of his opponent and becomes the offensive wrestler (on top). This may take place while the defensive wrestler is either on his feet or on the mat.

Near Fall (two or three points): Points for a near fall are awarded when the non-offensive wrestler has control of his opponent in a near pinning position. This occurs when the defensive wrestler’s shoulders are restrained four or fewer inches from the mat, on shoulder is touching the mat and the other is held at a 45 degree angle to the mat, or when the wrestler is in a high bridge or supported on both elbows. If the near fall criteria are met for a period of two consecutive seconds, a two point near fall is awarded; if the near fall criteria is met for a period of five consecutive seconds, a three point near fall is earned.

End of Match: A match ends when one of the following occurs: a pin (fall), a technical fall, or time expires.

Pin (Fall): The defensive wrestler (on bottom) is awarded two points for a reversal when he gains control of his opponent and becomes the offensive wrestler (on top). This may take place while the defensive wrestler is either on his feet or on the mat.

Technical Fall: When a wrestler has earned a 15 point advantage over his opponent, the referee will end the match.

Time Expired: If there has not been a fall or a technical fall by the end of the third period, the winner of the match is determined by the number of individual points scored. The wrestler with the most points wins the match by decision.

Overtime: A two minute overtime period begins immediately after the regulation match. Both wrestlers are in a neutral position. The first wrestler to score is the winner.

Infractions, Penalties & Injury, Timeouts, Illegal Holds
Illegal holds are dangerous and can cause injury. Whenever a referee witnesses one of these holds being used, he awards one point to the offenders opponent. Illegal holds include but are not limited to:

Slam: Lifting and returning an opponent to the mat with excessive force.

Hammerlock: Pulling the opponents arms too high on the back or pulling the arm away from the back.

Headlock: Arms or hands are locked around the opponents head with encircling an arm.

Full Nelson: Arms are under both arms of the opponent and behind the head. Potentially dangerous holds occur when a body part is forced to the limit of the normal range of movement.

Technical Violations: The referee will caution a wrestler against forcing a hold into an illegal position, however, he will not stop wrestling action unless it is necessary to prevent an injury. Technical violations may cause the offending wrestler to be penalized one point. The referee may give cautions or warnings about some violations, but not all. Technical violations include assuming an incorrect starting position, false start, grasping clothing or headgear, interlocking hands, and leaving the wrestling area without permission from the referee.

Conduct Infractions

Unnecessary Roughness: Physical acts that exceed normal aggressiveness.

Un-sportsmanlike Conduct: Physical and non-physical acts that can occur before, during, or after a match. Examples: shoving, swearing, failing to follow referee instructions, baiting and taunting.

Flagrant Misconduct: Any physical or non-physical act occurring before, during or after a match that the referee considers to be serious enough to disqualify a wrestler from a match or tournament. Examples: biting, hitting, head-butting, elbowing, etc.

Stalling: Each wrestler is required to make an honest attempt to stay within the 10 foot circle and wrestle aggressively at all times. When a referee recognizes stalling, he will warn the offender. Further violations will be penalized. Penalties and warnings are cumulative throughout the match and overtime. Penalty points are awarded to the offenders’ opponent. He is awarded one point for the first and second offenses, and two points for the third offense. On the fourth offense, the wrestling is disqualified.
