Parent’s Night Honors Wrestlers Biggest Fans
January 21, 2010: The 2nd Annual Weslaco Panther Wrestling Parents Night was held prior to the last team dual match of the 2009 – 2010 season. Each wrestler presented their parent(s) with roses and family photos were taken as well. Thank you to all the families that were in attendance and to Coach Pederson and his staff in coordinating this event. Senior wrestlers competing in the last home dual were: Liz Villarreal, Justin Ramirez, Juan Carlos “Charlie” Villegas, Ernie Garcia, Andres Medina and Alex Solis.

Lady Panthers Dominate PSJA North Lady Raiders 48 - 6 January 14, 2010: Our Lady Panthers won eight matches while the Lady Raiders won one match and one weight class was uncontested. The Lady Panthers won six matches by way of a Forfeit (36 points) and two matches by way of a Pin (12 points) for a total of 48 points. The Lady Raiders won a single forfeit for six points. The Lady Panthers now stand at 3-1 in district dual matches. (W) Congratulations!

The Raiders won one match by Forfeit (6 points), one match by Major Decision (4 points), and one match by Decision (3 points) for a total of 13 points.

Panthers Entertain PSJA – Bears, Final Dual, and Parents Night:
January 21, 2010: A revised schedule now places the PSJA Bears at WHS for the final team dual matches of the wrestling season. As our wrestlers are introduced, the will shake the hand of the opposing wrestler, then come over to where their parents will be standing, behind the team seating area, the wrestler will give the mom a flower and stand with the parents for a photo. The Takedown will feature the photos in our next edition and on the blog: www.weslacopantherwrestling.blogspot.com. The final varsity team has not been named yet, so those athletes not wrestling this night, but are in attendance with their parents, will be included as well. Those of you that have parent’s phone numbers, please feel free to call them and invite them. The Takedown does not have each family accounted for, and there are several that left the phone number and email sections of the information cards blank.

Lady Panthers Drop Dual To Lady Wildcats
Our Lady Panthers won four matches while the Lady Wildcats won six matches. The Lady Wildcats won five matches by way of a Pin (30 points) and one match by Forfeit (6 points) for a total of 36 points. The Lady Panthers won three matches by way of a Pin (18 points) and one match by Decision (3 points) for a total of 21 points. The Lady Panthers now stand at 2-1 in district dual matches.

Panthers Come Up Short Against Wildcats
It could have gone either way, but this time it went East’s way. The Panthers won seven matches and East won seven matches. The Wildcats won six matches by way of Pins for 36 points and one match by Forfeit for 6 points, a total of 42 points. The Panthers won four matches by way of Pins for 24 points and three matches by Major Decision for 12 points, at total of 36 points. (Winning scenarios: (a) If the Panthers had won all of their matches by way of a Pin, the score would have been a tie. (b) If the Panthers had won one additional match by way of Pin and also had a 130 weight class wrestler (which East did not), the Panthers would have won by two points. There were signs of overall improvement by some wrestlers, with the goal of them peaking in time for the District tournament on February 4, 2010.

January 7, 2010: Our fourth District Dual was cancelled due to the freezing weather. WHS conducted their normal practice session in its place. Should the Rio Hondo Dual be rescheduled for a later date, we will inform you when that happens.

January 9, 2010: The annual Rio Grande City Girls Tournament was cancelled due to the freezing weather. Should the tournament be rescheduled for a later day, we will inform you when that happens.

Panthers Host PSJA – North Raiders In what will turn out to be our only “home” dual of the year (San Benito – moved due to a basketball tournament conflict at WHS, Marine Military Academy – cancelled due to a limited amount of wrestlers, Rio Hondo – cold weather, the Panthers host the PSJA North Raiders on Thursday, January 14th at 7:00 p.m. A token of appreciation will be given to parents attending in thanks for your support.

Here’s wishing all of our Panther Wrestling community an awesome year! We would like to express our thanks and appreciation to each of our wrestlers and coaches as well as their families for their support and continued joint efforts in helping our program become the best that it can be.

Rio Grande City Rattlers Emerge Victorious as the 2010 Tomas Garces Team Dual Champions . . . . . . .

WHS Assistant Coach Moises Chavez spoke before the start of the tournament honoring the memory of Tomas Garces (a former teammate of Chavez), WHS Class of 2003, the former Panther Wrestler, two-time District Champion, two-time Regional Qualifier, and two-time State Qualifier; who was killed Sept. 6, 2004 in Baghdad, Iraq when his convoy was attacked by enemy forces using an improvised explosive device. Tomas was only 19 years old at the time.


Tomas’ parents, Rafael and Sonia Garces, were in attendance throughout the tournament and took part in presenting the Championship Trophy and medals to the Rio Grande City Rattlers, along with second place medals to the PSJA Bears and third place medals to the Weslaco East Wildcats.

Our lady wrestlers competed against 16 other teams in an Individual Tournament format. Clarisa Pina won a silver medal (W) Congratulations! Panthers Host District Dual: Rio Hondo Bobcats
Thursday, January 7th at Weslaco High School, 7:00 p.m. Start Time This will be our Fourth District Dual and the first dual held at our home gym this year. While it is forecast that it will be near freezing outside, our wrestlers will provide plenty of heated competition. Join us!

Lady Panthers Travel to RGC for Tourney: Our lady wrestlers will compete at the annual Rio Grande City Lady Rattler Tournament this Saturday, January 9, 2010. Check with your wrestler for departure, tournament, and arrival times.

Panthers To Host East Vs. West Competition:
Saturday, January 9th at Weslaco High School Gym +/- 8am to 5pm.  Coach Pederson stated this format will provide our wrestlers plenty of competition. Come spend the day enjoying live, competitive wrestling as we begin the final month of district wrestling. See you there!
