Panthers Thrill Fans at Weslaco East Classic:
A fast paced tournament, this year’s classic featured Marine Military Academy, PSJA, PSJA-North, Rio Hondo, San Benito, Sharyland, Rio Grande City, McAllen Memorial, Weslaco High and host Weslaco East. Going into the championship round the standings were as follows – Girls: (1) PSJA – 103, (2) Weslaco High – 85, (3) Weslaco East – 75, (4) San Benito – 72, and (5) Rio Grande City – 61. Boys: (1) Rio Grande City – 127, (2) Sharyland – 122 ½, (3) San Benito - 104, (4 – Tie) Weslaco High – 98, Weslaco East–98. Each week brings improvement. Congratualtions to all of our wrestlers!

103 Justin Ramirez: Match 1: Bye. Match 2: Justin was in complete control as he scored on a takedown before pinning Wesley Lancaster of PSJA North at the 1:26 mark of the first period. (W) Congratulations! Match 3: Justin went up against a much improved Jonathan Herrera of San Benito, but Justin’s experience came through as he led 2-1, 9-2, and 10-5, winning a decision at the end of the third period. Gold Medal (W) Congratulations! (Justin’s maternal grandmother, aunts and uncles, the Camacho’s, showed-up in force. In an “I didn’t think I would see it in my lifetime,” it was rare scene, loyal Donna Redskin fans cheering for a Weslaco Panther!)
119 Cody Casarez: Match 1: In an exciting (yet frustrating) match, Cody held his own against Conrad Murillo of Weslaco East, leading 2-0, 6-1, and all but the last few seconds of the third period when Murillo scored on back points to win 11-10. A tough one to lose! (L) Match 2: Cody was defeated by Jesus Canales of Rio Grande City (L) A reflective Cody said he learned from his mistakes.
125 Juan C. (Charlie) Villegas: Match 1: Reaching 16-0 midway through the second period Charlie won the match by tech fall over Damian Marroquin of PSJA (W) Congratulations! Match 2: Charlie demonstrated experience and control as he led 7-1 and 14-2 when he pinned Fito Landa of PSJA at the 1:10 mark of the second period. (W) Congratulations! Match 3: In a tight championship match, Charlie maintained a steady grip as he led 2-1, 5-2, and 8-2 before pinning Michael Pippenger of Sharyland at the 1:27 mark; 3rd period. Gold Medal (W) Congratulations!
125 Gilbert Mata: Match 1: Gilbert lost to Fito Land of PSJA in the first match of the tournament. (L) Match 2: Gilbert kept the match close as he trailed 0-2 the first two periods before losing a decision to Damian Marroquin of PSJA 2-4 in the third period. (L)
130 Ernie Garcia: Match 1: In an exciting, tight match-up, Ernie trailed 3-5 (1st), came back to tie at 5-5 (2nd), and was trailing late in the third period when he was awarded three back points to come from behind to defeat Simon Pineiro of PJSA 12-11. (W) Congratulations! Match 2: Ernie kept scoring on a steady basis to lead 10-2 (2nd) and then kept Migueas Proctor of McAllen Memorial from completing a comeback as Ernie won a decision 14-10. (W) Congratulations! Match 3: Ernie trailed 2-10 (1st), 6-14 (2nd), and 13-22 (3rd) losing a major decision to Jordan Hill of Sharyland. (L) Ernie finished in second place. Silver Medal (W) Congratulations!
130 Jesse Rodriguez: Match 1: Jesse trailed 0-2, 0-7, and 0-9 losing a major decision to Ricardo Vasquez of PSJA. (L) Match 2: Jesse lost to Simon Pineiro of PSJA. (L)
135 Hector Villanueva, Jr.: Match 1: Hector led teammate Chris Brown 2-0 before pinning Chris late in the first period. (W) Congratulations! Match 2: Hector and Mario Jurado of San Benito were tied 3-3 after the first period and well into the second period when Hector pinned Jurado at the 1:52 mark. (W) Congratulations! Match 3: Hector was unable to be effective against Fernando Flores of Sharyland, trailing 2-18 to lose by tech fall. (L) Silver Medal Congratulations!
135 Chris Brown: Match 1: Chris trailed 0-2 when he was pinned by teammate Hector Villanueva, Jr. late in the first period. (L) Match 2: Trailing 0-2, Chris pinned a Sharyland wrestler at the 0:48 mark of the first period. (W) Congratulations! Match 3: Chris defeated Michael Trevino of Rio Grande City. (W) Congratulations! Match 4: In his last match, Chris lost to Josue Munoz of McAllen Memorial and finished the tournament with a 2-2 record. (L)
140 Gonzalo Gutierrez: Returning to the mat after a week off for a shoulder injury, Gonzalo had a bye in the first round before meeting teammate Josh (Chip) Cruz in the second round. Gonzalo kept a steady scoring pace as he led 2-0, 5-2, and 7-2 in winning a decision over Cruz. (W) Congratulations! Match 2: Gonzalo had difficulty in containing Eli Ocanas of Weslaco East as Ocanas led 2-3 and 4-8 before pinning Gonzalo at the 1:10 mark of the third period. (L) Match 3: Gonzalo was defeated by Mike Gonzalez of PSJA to end his run in this tournament. (L)
140 Josh (Chip) Cruz: Match 1: A promising freshman, Josh defeated Jose Garcia of Weslaco East. (W) Congratulations! Match 2: Josh lost a decision to teammate Gonzalo Gutierrez 2-7. (L) Match 3: Leading 4-1, Josh wrapped the match up quickly in pinning of Jimmy Silva Rio Hondo at the 1:11 mark of the first period. (W) Congratulations! Match 4: Against Chris Martinez of Sharyland, Josh led 2-0 before pinning Martinez at the 1:42 mark of the 1st period. (W) Congratulations! Match 5: Josh trailed 2-6 and 4-10 before being pinned in the third period by Sergio Proctor of McAllen Memorial for third place in the tournament. (L)
145 Dante de la Rosa: Match 1: Dante was pinned by Justin Regino of PSJA in the second period. (L) Match 2: Dante lost to Dominic Pena of Sharyland. (L)
152 Adrian Sanchez: Match 1: Trailing 1-4 (1st) and 2-4 (2nd) Adrian was pinned by Zeke Alvarez of San Benito at the 1:05 mark of the second period. (L) Match 2: Behind 6-7, 6-10 and 6-12, Adrian was pinned with 11 seconds left in the third period by Aaron Rangel of Sharyland. (L)
152 Josafath (Jay) Alvizo: Match 1: Jay trailed Alex Sanchez 0-2 (1st) and 1-3 (2nd) before tying the match at 3-3 and pinning Sanchez with 10 second left in the third period. (W) Congratulations! Match 2: Tied 0-0 after the first period, Jay trailed 2-5 and 2-7 before being pinned by Steve Munoz of Weslaco East. (L) The match was competitive and Jay had opportunities to win but did not take advantage of them. Match 3: Jay lost his final bout to Zeke Alvarez of San Benito. (L)
160 Andres (Andy) Sanchez: Match 1: Andy trailed 2-5, 2-10 before losing a 3-10 decision to teammate Andres Medina. (L) Match 2: Andy led from beginning to end 2-0, 4-0 and 7-0 before pinning Doug Gomez of Rio Hondo in the third period. (W) Congratulations! Match 3: Andy was tied 2-2 with David Navarro of PSJA North after the first period then trailed 2-5 for the remainder of the match losing a decision to Navarro. (L)
160 Andres Medina: Match 1: Andres led 5-2, 10-2 and 10-3 in winning a decision over teammate Andres (Andy) Sanchez. (W) Congratulations! Match 2: Andres trailed 0-5 and 0-7 when he was pinned by Rogelio Zavala of Weslaco East at the 0:49 mark of the second period. (L) Match 2: Andres was tied 6-6 (1st), trailed 11-12 (2nd) and 11-15 at the end of the 3rd period, losing a decision to Edward Leonar of Marine Military Academy. (L)
171 Everardo Tirado: Match 1: Bye. Match 2: Everadro lost to Amancio Vazquez of San Benito. (L) Match 3: Everadro lost to Tomas Dimas of PSJA. (L)
171 Kevin Lopez: Match 1: Bye. Match 2: Kevin led 3-0 before pinning Amancio Vazquez of San Benito at the 0:38 mark of the first period. (W) Congratulations! Match 3: Kevin kept control of J. T. Pembrook of Sharyland leading 2-0, 3-0 and 5-0 in winning by decision. (W) Congratulations! Match 4: Kevin led from start to finish, 5-1 (1st), 7-2 (2nd) and 11-5 (3rd) before pinning Joshua Benavides of PSJA to win the match and the championship. It has been a long road for Kevin, but he made a solid and impressive debut. Gold Medal (W) Congratulations!
180 Matt Torres: Match 1: Matt led 2-0 before pinning Crawford Engleking of Marine Military Academy at the 1:32 mark of the first period. (W) Congratulations! Match 2: Freshman Matt gave seasoned senior Senon Moya of Weslaco East a competitive match 0-2 (1st), 4-5 (2nd) and 4-5 (3rd) losing by decision. (L) Match 3: Matt defeated teammate Manny Cruz. (W) Congratulations! Match 4: In an exciting third place match, Matt and Joey Mayorga of Rio Grande City were tied 7-7 at the end of three periods. Going into overtime, Mayorga scored to win the match 9-7. (L) These tough matches give our promising freshman a good foundation that will lead to his improvement and eventual individual and tournament winning ways.
180 Manny Cruz: Match 1: Manny was defeated by Joey Mayorga of Rio Grande City. (L) Match 2: Bye. Match 3: Manny led 5-4 before pinning Daniel Gomez of Sharyland at the 0:46 mark of the second period. (W) Congratulations! Match 4: Manny lost to teammate Matt Torres. (L)
215 Alex Solis: Match 1: Bye. Match 2: Alex led Ramiro Saldivar of San Benito 4-1 (1st) before falling behind 8-9 and being pinned with 14 seconds left in the second period. (L) Match 3: Alex pinned Gabriel Moore of Marine Military Academy at the 1:08 mark of the first period to win third place. (W) Bronze Medal Congratulations!

128 Liz Villarreal: Match 1: Liz led 2-0 (1st), 2-0 (2nd), and 7-0 at the end of the third period to defeat Ana Reyes of McAllen Memorial by decision. (W) Congratulations! Match 2: Liz led Adriana Mancillas of San Benito 9-0 before pinning her at the 0:47 mark of the second period. (W) Congratulations! Match 3: In the championship match, Liz trailed 0-2 when she was pinned at the 1:18 mark of the first period by Samantha Sepulveda of Rio Grande City. (L) Silver Medal Congratulations! This was the third straight tournament where Liz has met Sepulveda in the finals, with Sepulveda winning all three thus far.
138 Ana Almaguer: Match 1: Leading 5-0, Ana defeated teammate Danica Garner, pinning her with seven seconds left in the first period. (W) Congratulations! Match 2: Anna led 5-0 (1st) and 7-4 (2nd) before pinning Ashley Zaragosa of PSJA. (W) Congratulations! Match 3: Ana trailed 0-5 (1st) and 0-7 (2nd) when she was pinned with seven seconds left in the period by Stephanie Hernandez of PSJA. (L) Ana will face these wrestlers again in district play. 138 Danica Garner: Match 1: Danica trailed 0-5 when she was defeated by teammate Ana Almaguer with seven seconds left in the first period. (L) Match 2: Leading throughout, Danica won a 7-0 decision over Leslie Lopez of Rio Grande City. (W) Congratulations! Match 3: Danica defeated Jazmine Moreno of PSJA North. (W) Congratulations! Match 4: Danica was to have met either Jessica Reybal of McAllen Memorial, results not available.
148 Amanda Rodriguez: Match 1: Amanda led 4-2 (1st), 8-4 (2nd), and 8-6 (3rd) winning a tough match with a decision over Luar Rojas of Sharyland. (W) Congratulations! Match 2: Amanda led through the third period and defeated Lisa Gonzalez of Rio Grande City by a decision of 8-1. (W) Congratulations! The Takedown was not able to verify further match results for Amanda.

Thursday, December 17, 2009 at 7:00 p.m. The school is located at 800 South Alamo Road. Take the Alamo Road (FM 907) exit; go south 1.7 miles, crossing Old Hwy. 83, the school will be on your left. Access to the campus is on both Alamo Rd. and Ridge Rd. to the south. See you there and wear Purple!
Road Trip: Corpus Christi Gulf-Coast Duals Tournament
The annual Gulf-Coast Duals tournament will be held this Friday, December 18th and Saturday, December 19th at Corpus Christi W. B. Ray High School. Please check with your wrestler for complete details. For Panther fans planning to attend, Ray High School is located at 1002 Texan Trail (361.878.7300). Directions: traveling north on Highway 77, take a right at Driscoll onto FM 665, this road then turns into FM 43 before becoming Weber Road. Major streets you will cross are Saratoga Blvd., Holly Road, (Carroll High School on the left), keep going under Expressway 358 (South Padre Island Dr.). Weber Road eventually becomes Doddridge Street; you will next cross Gollihar Road before coming to South Staples Street. Take a left on to South Staples Street, then go several blocks (northwest direction) and you will come upon Texan Trail. Ray High School is on the corner of Texan Trail and South Staples Street. Aerial photos on the internet indicate athletic fields, and we assume gym(s), at the back of the campus with parking lots accessible from both Texas Trail and South Staples Street. It is easier to get to the campus than it appears. If all else fails, look for the school buses!
